#MyCulinaryVoice – Moj kulinaricni glas

Za slovenski jezik, prosim preskoci angleski zapis.

The country’s cuisine takes a person to the past. It reminds you of the precious moments, even if that was only a lunch your grandma made. When you bite into something you ate as a child, you feel as a child again. You transfer yourself through time into the past to the same table where you ate the same meal. Maybe this is the reason that I’m always buying all the sweets at the Euro Market. To bring those childhood memories back. The same chocolate bar that my dad always bought me, the same cookies my mum brought home, Eurokrem, my favorite breakfast… And then I have to tell my husband not to touch anything because it all has a nostalgic feel for me.

Since I’ve lived so far away from home I’ve always been cooking Slovenian food like Mlecni mocnik, Ajdovi zganci, Ajdov Kruh, Struklji, Blejska kremsnita, Matevz in kranjska klobasa and so many more true Slovenian dishes. And each one of them reminds me of a certain time or event in my life. I think that if you never leave you somehow can’t feel this. Usually foreign food is the most interesting, the most exotic. And that’s okay. I think we should try whatever we can if we have the opportunity. But it is something about the homemade meal, the one your mum makes you when you return from a long travel. Nothing can beat that.

Because of all of those reasons I am trying to introduce Slovenian cuisine to the world. My country was a part of so many different nations like the Roman Empire, Habsburg Monarchy, also a part of Yugoslavia and at some time it was also occupied by Germans, Italians and Hungarians, the preperation of food of course got influenced by all those other nations. That is the reason Slovenian cuisine is so tremendlesly diverse, so full of flavors that is really hard to compare it with a pure Italian or French cuisine or any other for that matter. Slovenian cuisine is extraordinary. Now I can also see that there is interest for it and from time to time I even get a message about it, sometimes from Slovenian-Americans and sometimes from Americans. I think it’s great that people are interested and I think a lot can be done about it. So I’m trying to make as many recipe videos I can to show the world how to cook Slovenian food.

When I started writing this blog my plan was to show American cuisine to people at home but I think I’ve found my calling now and I’m sharing Slovenian specialties. And why wouldn’t I? Our cuisine is so colorful that many people who once try it, want to eat it again. So I am very proud to offer you what I know about Slovenian culinary specialties.

Recently I’ve received the biggest confirmation about my thoughts about Slovenian food. I realized that people adore our food. And that I can make it happen. And I finally know what my calling is, what to do in my life. Some of you who know me personally know that in my life I was doing a lot of different things but I also got tired of a lot of them. I am 32 and I finally know what my place is. And I think back to the time when we had to decide to which high school to go to, or college and I know now that I had no clue. I thought I knew what I wanted to do and because of that I tried the things that interested me but I stuck with one, the culinary. I have found myself here in America, far away from home and I’m sure if I have never left I’d never get to the point where I am now.

A few months ago I participated in a culinary competition on the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE) in New York. Most of you probably remembers voting for me for three days straight and I already thanked to my Slovenian people but I also have to thank you all the American and other countries people for voting and believing in me. This competition even though they haven’t chosen me, gave me confidence that I can do it. That I can dream again and I can achieve my dreams. Because of the support I’ve gotten. It also gave me time to walk the unknown paths for me and to learn more about the culinary science. I will also proceed with the formal education of Culinary Management but at the right time I guess, when I’m ready financially. But till then I am trying to learn as much as I can and I’m trying to have all kinds of experiences in a culinary world.

After that crazy and inspiring time I’ve met so many people who had a great interest in Slovenian cuisine and in my culinary voice that it opened new ways for me and I am so grateful for all of it that is happening now. I took classes of Techniques of Fine cooking at the same school I competed for a free tuition (ICE) and I loved it. It was such an inspiring week, so full of new knowledge that I’m planning to take some more classes very soon. Just before I spent a week at ICE I was also invited to Washington DC to experience European Union Embassies’ Open House event and it was just so amazing to meet all other Slovenians and connect. And after that the best thing happened to me. I was asked to cater authentic Slovenian cuisine to 350 eminent guests at the Slovenian Embassy in Washington DC for the celebration of the Slovenian National Day.

I guess you can too, see that after the competition my path didn’t stop but it actually widened and breought me lots of different opportunities.

But to tell you all about it I will have to write a new post where I will share my experience with you. Till then, thank you for reading and supporting me.

In vsaka jed me spomni na doloceno dobo v mojem zivljenju.

Sprva pod rimskim imperijem, potem pod habsbursko monarhijo, kasneje v Jugoslaviji oz kraljevini SHS do okupacije Nemcev, Italjanov in Madzadov.

Vlili ste mi moc in pogum.

Nobene zal besede od nikogar, same pozitivne misli. Res lepa in pozitivna izkusnja.

Vljudno vabljeni k branju.
